Why are Murphy Beds making such a big comeback?
There are several trends that are creating the demand for Murphy Beds. The increased use of home computers and the internet, and the subsequent desire to have a home office, is one. Many of our customers want the room to be a multi-function room, that is they also want to be able to include space for sewing, crafts, home entertainment or exercise equipment, and also to have the space available for overnight guests when the need arises. Owing to the rising cost of real estate, few homes can have a guest room that serves no other function. With the addition of a Murphy Bed, the room can be converted into a comfortable guest room, with a made-up bed, within seconds.
How does a Murphy Bed create a multi-purpose room?
The bed cabinet is only 16 inches deep, and tilts up against, and is fixed onto, the wall. By removing the bed from the floor, the majority of the room is available for other uses.

Single, double and queen bed cabinets are all 16" deep, unless an extended leg is necessary to accomodate an extra thick mattress.
Can I use my own mattress?
Yes, however please make sure you have it available when your Murphy Bed is being installed. That way the bed can be balanced with the correct number of springs. Our standard leg will accomodate a mattress up to 10" thick. An extended leg option is available to accomodate thicker mattresses.
If you would like us to provide the mattress, our favorite is the Serta Perfect Sleeper. Owing to a volume purchase arrangement we have with Serta, we are able to supply this high quality, continuous coil mattress at a reasonable cost to our customers. Your Murphy Bed will provide a very comfortable nights sleep on a regular bed mattress - unlike a futon, sofa bed or day bed can.
Can the bedding be left in place when the Murpy Bed is placed in the up-right position?
Yes, the bedding may be folded in and the pillows placed under the velcro strap provided. All the bedding and the mattress must be able to tuck under the leg support rod. We have a completely made-up queen size Murphy Bed on display in our showroom.
Do I need a box spring?
No, you can obtain optimum comfort without a box spring. For years, doctors have recommended a piece of plywood between a box spring and top mattress for better back support and comfort. Many new base supports on conventional beds are boxes or platforms designed to bring your coil spring top mattress up to an easily accessible height.
When would a side-tilt Murphy Bed be used in a multi-purpose room?
Side-tilt beds are used in very narrow rooms or in low ceiling areas. The bed cabinet is wider in the side-tilt position, but the bed does not protrude as far into the room when it is down. Side-tilt beds can also have easily accessible storage above them.
I'm not sure where I could put a Murphy Bed, or how I could include a desk and cabinetry in the same space. Can you help with space planning?
Our office has trained professionals ready to assist you in the design and construction of a multi-purpose room. We also have computer generated three-dimensional images to help you visualize the finished product. We are able to create matching custom cabinetry, work stations, storage components and entertainment units...whatever you need to make the room function for you.
What materials are available for the construction of Murphy Beds and side cabinetry?
We use only top grade woods and veneers in our products. The most popular are oak, maple, alder, pine, cherry and hickory. There is a wide variety of stains and special finishes from which to choose to give that fine furniture look. Custom staining is available so your new bed unit and cabinets can match existing cabinetry. We can also make a painted wood product in white or antique white, or our starter model which is made from slab melamine.
Does the flooring have to be in place before you install a Murphy Bed or side cabinetry?
The bed unit is installed on finished flooring, and attached to a finished wall.
If I move, can I take my Murphy Bed with me?
Yes, you can, providing your new home has space to accommodate it. The bed cabinet is attached securely to the studs in the wall or into concrete. Once it is removed, there are only a few screw holes to repair in the drywall. We recommend having our installer "disassemble" the bed prior to your move, and having a professional installer "reassemble" it at the other end, as the springs are set at a very high tension. Many of our customers find that they are able to recover the full cost of their bed unit when selling their home, as the purchasers appreciate the built-in appearance and function of the wall-bed.
Is there a warranty on the Murphy Bed mechanism?
Murphy Bed (TM) hardware is German engineered, and the best in the industry. For that reason it has a lifetime warranty on residential use.
